PSV have announced that they will compensate fans attending the second leg of their round of 16 Champions League tie at Arsenal on Wednesday.

The gesture comes in response to the Dutch side’s 7-1 drubbing in the first leg of the tie, leaving them with them a near-impossible task of reaching the quarterfinals.

Paying for the match tickets of their away contingnent at the Emirates Stadium will cost PSV upwards of €200,000 ($218,550).

“After the poor result at home last week, your support and presence are extra appreciated,” the club wrote in an email sent to the fans with a ticket.

PSV bounced back from the thrashing to Arsenal with a 2-1 win over Heerenveen on Saturday. The game marked the return of United States defender Sergiño Dest after a 11-month injury layoff.

IRVING, Texas — Texas Tech sophomore forward JT Toppin was selected by Big 12 coaches as the league’s best player and newcomer of the year in a vote revealed Monday, a day before the start of the 16-team league’s postseason tournament.

Toppin, a transfer from New Mexico, has 14 double-doubles and is the only Big 12 player who ranks top three in scoring (18.1 PPG) and rebounding (9.3 RPG). He is the first Big 12 player in the league’s 29 seasons to be voted by coaches as the top player and top newcomer in the same season.

Houston’s Kelvin Sampson was selected by his peers as the Big 12’s top coach. The second-ranked Cougars (27-4, 19-1 Big 12) have won the conference title in both seasons since joining the league, becoming the first program to join a major conference and win back-to-back regular-season titles since Idaho won the Pacific Coast Conference in the 1921-22 and 1922-23 seasons.

Houston forward Joseph Tugler was voted defensive player of the year and guard LJ Cryer the top scholar-athlete. Baylor’s VJ Edgecombe was voted the Big 12’s top freshman, BYU’s Richie Saunders was chosen as the league’s most improved player, and Curtis Jones of fifth-seeded Iowa State was voted the top sixth man.

Cryer, Jones, Saunders and Toppin joined Caleb Love of Arizona, Norchad Omier of Baylor, J’Wan Roberts of Houston, Hunter Dickinson of Kansas, Darrion Williams of Texas Tech and Javon Small of West Virginia on the coaches’ All-Big 12 first team.

The Big 12 Tournament begins Tuesday with four opening-round games. The championship game is Saturday.

Manchester United CEO Omar Berrada has admitted the club “risk” falling further behind their rivals while they invest in their new stadium.

United announced plans on Tuesday to leave Old Trafford, their home for 115 years, and move into a new 100,000-capacity stadium.

The proposal includes an expected cost of around £2 billion ($2.59 billion), a significant strain on finances which are already stretched after posting losses of more than £300 million ($388.57 million) over the last three years.

Both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur struggled to remain competitive on the pitch while they built new stadiums and Berrada accepts that money available to strengthen the squad may be impacted as the project is being financed.

“That is a risk,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

“Clearly it’s something we want to avoid. We don’t want to inhibit our ability to invest in the team, for us to continue being competitive while we are building a new stadium.”

Berrada confirmed that United will not be asking for taxpayer money to fund the stadium, but said the club are actively looking for investors.

The aim is to move into their new home in five years ahead of the 2030-31 season. Work could start before the end of the year, although Berrada said it would be “predicated on planning permission and how quickly the local authority can work.”

The United chief also explained how the club could announce ambitious plans for a new stadium just a day after co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe said money would have run out by the end of 2025 without his wide-ranging cost-cutting measures.

“All the plans we’ve been putting in place over the last months really address the short-term issue, which is that the club was losing money,” said Berrada.

“Everything that we’re doing and a lot of these decisions are difficult and we hate to see people losing their jobs.

“Once we stop losing money, we then put ourselves in the best financial position to continue investing in our team and also to allow us to be able to have the ambition to build a new stadium.”

Despite a difficult start to Ruben Amorim’s tenure as head coach, Berrada said he would “love to open the new stadium with Ruben as a coach.”

The club have started work on their recruitment ahead of Amorim’s first summer window.

Berrada said there will be money to spend regardless of whether United qualify for Europe next season, but insisted players will not be signed solely to play in the Portuguese coach’s 3-4-3 system.

“When it comes to our recruitment strategy without commenting too much, but the idea we have is to be able to bring in versatile players that can be adaptable to multiple systems,” said Berrada.

“And ultimately Ruben himself has said it, it’s not about the 3-4-3 tactical formation, it’s about an idea, a concept of how he wants to see the team playing. He wants to see the team playing more on the front foot, more of a possession, attacking-based style of football.

“So for that, you need players that can play in multiple positions that can adapt to that vision that Ruben has. And this is what we’re going to try to do over the next years in our recruitment.”

Two-time champion Iga Swiatek continued her march at Indian Wells with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Karolina Muchova on Tuesday to reach the quarterfinals.

Swiatek, the former world No. 1, has only dropped six games since arriving at California desert event and shoved aside Muchova with a near-flawless performance, with just four errors against a dozen winners while never facing a break point.

Swiatek is aiming to become the first woman to win the 1000-level tournament three times, after serving a one-month suspension late last year for a failed drug test.

After waiting through a rain delay, Swiatek took immediate hold of the momentum, sprinting through the first four games and not dropping a first-serve point in the opening set.

Muchova, who enjoyed an inspired run to the US Open semifinal last year after recovering from wrist surgery, was unable to find her level in the second set as the mistakes piled up.

Swiatek closed it out in 57 minutes with an unreturnable serve to set up a meeting with either Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen of China or Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, who meet later. American fourth seed Jessica Pegula is also scheduled to play Elina Svitolina on Tuesday night.

Rain forced the suspension of play shortly after Swiatek’s win.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Jai Lucas acknowledges his coaching pedigree lacks the vital role of running a team but believes that experience gained through assistant stops at “Blue Blood” programs has prepared him for the massive undertaking that awaits him.

The 36-year-old Lucas was introduced as the men’s basketball coach at Miami on Monday. Lucas replaces Jim Larrañaga, who retired Dec. 26 after guiding the Hurricanes for 14 seasons. Larrañaga attended the introductory news conference as well as Lucas’ father, former NBA player and coach John Lucas.

“I’ve experienced a lot of things except for running a program,” Lucas said. “But through these experiences that I have gone through and the preparation that I have done, I know I’m prepared and ready to lead.”

Lucas, an assistant with No. 1 Duke for the past three seasons, officially began his new job Sunday and will not be part of the Blue Devils’ staff during the postseason tournament cycle.

Two years after a Final Four run, the Hurricanes finished the season at 7-24 and an Atlantic Coast Conference-worst 3-17, eliminating them from the conference tournament. They were 11-39 since winning 11 of their first 13 games in 2023-24.

“It was extremely hard to leave [Duke] just because of the relationships you built there,” Lucas said. “This year we finally had a team that could win it all. You recruited those kids and we have returning players that have been there three years and you build that bond.

“I felt it was my responsibility to get down here as quick as I could and make sure we get started on the right foot and get the program going. That was important to me.”

Before his tenure at Duke, Lucas was an assistant at Kentucky and Texas. Recognized for his recruiting skills, Lucas anticipates a radical team makeover but also is open to retaining Hurricanes players with remaining eligibility.

“It’s going to be a big overhaul,” Lucas said. “My expectation coming in was that I would need to get 13 new players just because that’s the way it is. But you never know of the opportunity of people coming back.”

Miami athletic director Dan Radakovich and a search committee remained locked in on Lucas despite the great interest in the job.

“From the outset the committee was impressed with Jai,” Radakovich said. “His knowledge of the game. Passion for the game and his commitment to building a basketball program the right way.”

Larrañaga believes Lucas will successfully adapt to the head-coaching role.

“The great thing for Jai is he played the game and comes from a basketball family,” Larrañaga said. “He has worked for some of the best college basketball coaches in the history of the game. He is very well prepared.”

Palmeiras president Leila Mejdalani Pereira said CONMEBOL’s punishment of Cerro Porteno for racial abuse against Palmeiras under-20 player Luighi was too lenient, criticizing the South American governing body’s treatment of Brazilian clubs.

CONMEBOL fined the Paraguayan club $50,000 and banned fans from attending their home games during the Libertadores under-20 tournament, where 18-year-old striker Luighi was left in tears on Thursday when a man in the stands made racist gestures at visiting Palmeiras players.

“It hurts the soul,” Luighi later wrote on Instagram. “Until when? That is the question I hope we won’t have to ask at some point. For now, we keep fighting.”

Pereira said CONMEBOL’s punishment for Cerro was absurd.

“Firstly, I would like to express my indignation at CONMEBOL’s penalty of $50,000 and closed gates,” she told TNT Sports on Monday.

“If you’re a minute late entering the pitch, it’s $100,000. If you light a flare, $78,000. You see how CONMEBOL views the offence of racism. It’s absurd.”

Pereira said Palmeiras and other clubs have signed a letter to FIFA, asking the global governing body to intervene in cases of racism.

“Luighi’s tears hurt … it’s not possible that someone wasn’t moved by that boy’s sadness … the vast majority of Brazilian clubs have suffered this kind of crime,” she said.

Pereira said Brazilian clubs were not treated well by CONMEBOL despite the country accounting for 60% of the governing body’s revenue.

“When the incident happened, I called [CONMEBOL] president Alejandro [Dominguez], but I couldn’t talk,” Pereira added. “After I gave the interview that everyone saw, he called me and told me that he would be very strict with the sanctions, but from what I saw, he wasn’t that strict.

“[And you can see that] because of the sanction that CONMEBOL gave for this incident. I have no doubt that this is an incentive for new cases of racism to occur.

“But I have no doubts about the solidarity we have with all Brazilian clubs, the vast majority of which have already suffered this type of crime in South America, in tournaments organized by CONMEBOL, I have no doubt that this will not stay like this.

“We will take very serious measures against CONMEBOL. It is not with a little note, no, we have to take firm measures.”

Pereira even floated the prospect of Brazilian clubs ditching CONMEBOL and joining up with the North, Central American and Caribbean governing body Concacaf.

“I’ll even throw out an idea … why not think about joining Concacaf?” she said.

“I think that’s the only way they will respect Brazilian football, because Brazilian football isn’t being respected by CONMEBOL.”

Troy (23-10) won the Sun Belt Conference tournament championship to earn a spot in the NCAA tournament for the third time in program history.
