Two-time champion Iga Swiatek continued her march at Indian Wells with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Karolina Muchova on Tuesday to reach the quarterfinals.

Swiatek, the former world No. 1, has only dropped six games since arriving at California desert event and shoved aside Muchova with a near-flawless performance, with just four errors against a dozen winners while never facing a break point.

Swiatek is aiming to become the first woman to win the 1000-level tournament three times, after serving a one-month suspension late last year for a failed drug test.

After waiting through a rain delay, Swiatek took immediate hold of the momentum, sprinting through the first four games and not dropping a first-serve point in the opening set.

Muchova, who enjoyed an inspired run to the US Open semifinal last year after recovering from wrist surgery, was unable to find her level in the second set as the mistakes piled up.

Swiatek closed it out in 57 minutes with an unreturnable serve to set up a meeting with either Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen of China or Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, who meet later. American fourth seed Jessica Pegula is also scheduled to play Elina Svitolina on Tuesday night.

Rain forced the suspension of play shortly after Swiatek’s win.

Americans Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton gave the home fans at Indian Wells plenty to cheer about Monday, taming wind-whipped conditions in the California desert to reach the fourth round.

Fritz, the 2022 BNP Paribas Open champion and No. 3 seed, overcame a slow start to beat Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

He said he expected a tough fight in the next round against Britain’s Jack Draper, who dimmed the Americans’ joy as he beat home hope Jenson Brooksby in straight sets.

“It’s going to be a tough match. I think it’s a tough draw to get him in the round of 16 as a top-four seed. He’s a very good player,” Fritz said. “I think he’s probably better than his ranking is … we have had some tight ones.”

Shelton, 22, got the crowd on its feet as he played with power and poise to defeat Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-5, despite dealing with blisters on his hand.

Down a break in the second set, Shelton won the final four games of the match and clinched it with one of eight aces and a mighty cheer. He will play fellow American Brandon Nakashima in the round of 16.

In the evening session, two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz breezed past Denis Shapovalov 6-2, 6-4.

Coco Gauff overcame late nerves to beat Maria Sakkari 7-6 (1), 6-2 and reach the round of 16 at Indian Wells on Monday, as her fellow American Madison Keys held off Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-7 (8), 6-4.

Gauff, the No. 3 seed, was in fine form until the final game, when she produced six double-faults before closing it out on her sixth match point. She will next play Belinda Bencic.

“Except the last game I thought I played a great match. Just trying to look at the positives,” Gauff said after securing the win with a forehand winner. “Obviously I was a bit disappointed with the last game but that’s just the perfectionist in me.”

Gauff had revenge on her mind in front of the home crowd after losing to Sakkari in the semifinals of last year’s BNP Paribas Open, and showed her mettle as she won six points in a row to triumph in the first-set tiebreak.

After trading breaks again early in the second set, Gauff broke Sakkari to love in the fifth game and looked ready to run away with the momentum from there.

But the serving struggles she has fought mightily to overcome undermined her best efforts toward the end, and she was forced to save four break points in the final game to keep it to two sets.

“Always an honor and privilege to play in front of this crowd,” said Gauff, giving credit to the partisan U.S. crowd that powered her across the finish line in the California desert.

Earlier in the day, Keys saved 12 of the 15 break points she faced to secure her 14th straight match victory, despite letting four match points slip through her fingers in the second set.

The fifth-seeded Keys, who lost to Mertens in their two previous meetings, sent over five aces to set up a fourth-round meeting with the winner of a match between American Emma Navarro and Donna Vekic of Croatia.

British No. 1 Jack Draper booked himself a place in the round of 16 at Indian Wells on Monday with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Jenson Brooksby of the United States.

In contrast to his opening-round clash against Joao Fonseca, in which he sealed the victory by winning nine consecutive games, Draper struggled to maintain a consistent performance against Brooksby.

Draper averted what would have been his lowest-ranked defeat by edging past the world No. 937 but was visibly rattled by his opponent during the opening set. The Briton trailed 1-4 and slammed his racquet on the floor in frustration.

“Jenson is an unorthodox player, he makes life really difficult,” Draper said after the match. “He doesn’t make the rhythm easy. I got off to a slow start, I missed a couple of opportunities early on.

“But I’m glad of the way I fought and competed. Even though it wasn’t my best tennis today, I’m really happy with the way I tried my best to stay cool.”

Draper will face either third seed and 2022 champion Taylor Fritz or 30th seed Alejandro Tabilo in the round of 16.

LONDON — A national-level chair umpire in the Dominican Republic, Juan Gabriel Castro, was suspended for six years and fined $6,000 by the International Tennis Integrity Agency on Monday for manipulating scoring during matches to help someone who was placing bets.

The ITIA said Castro was found to have committed 12 breaches of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program across three matches.

Castro did not respond to the ITIA’s notice of charge. He was accused of having “manipulated scoring entry to contrive the scorecard and facilitate corruption.”

Someone who doesn’t respond to the ITIA’s investigative process can be found guilty of a “deemed sanction” and then have 10 business days to appeal. Castro did not appeal.

He has been provisionally suspended since last November, so his ban will end in November 2030.

The BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells welcomed a star-studded trio during third round action on Sunday night.

Actor Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner attended matches at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. They were spotted during the Holger Rune-Ugo Humbert match, which Rune won 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.

Cameras also caught Kendall Jenner alongside her sister, Kylie, and Chalamet.

Rune showed appreciation as he reposted a clip of Chalamet and Kylie, writing on X: “Love the support out here.”

The “Complete Unknown” star is known for his sports fandom. He appeared on ESPN’s “College GameDay” in December, stunning the crew with his sports knowledge. In January, New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns gifted Chalamet, a Knicks fan, a signed jersey after a win. Chalamet also sat courtside at the Knicks-Los Angeles Lakers game last Thursday.

Indian Wells is no stranger to celebrity couples. Last year, Zendaya and Tom Holland attended the women’s championship match between Iga Swiatek and Maria Sakkari. Zendaya then posed with Swiatek after her win.

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — Stefanos Tsitsipas showed off his impressive athleticism and defense, leaping for overheads and speeding around the court to beat Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 6-3 on Sunday to reach the fourth round at Indian Wells.

“I’m approaching these matches with determination and willingness to just leave it all out there on the court,” said Tsitsipas, the No. 8 seed. “I want to get out there on the court and be a gladiator, and that’s how I approach every single match I get to play.”

Tsitsipas, from Greece, will face battle-tested Holger Rune after the Danish player dug deep to outlast France’s Ugo Humbert 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 with the backing of the Stadium 1 crowd.

“I tried to be brave,” Rune said of his play over the final two games of the match. “The energy on this court was truly amazing.”

Daniil Medvedev was on court for just 10 minutes before his American opponent, Alex Michelsen, was forced to retire due to illness after two games.

The Russian fifth seed has lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the BNP Paribas Open final the past two years, and the world No. 3 is once again on the opposite side of the draw.

Medvedev will next face popular American Tommy Paul, who notched his 50th win at a Masters 1000 tournament with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Britain’s Cameron Norrie.

Tallon Griekspoor toppled 29th-seeded Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard after stunning top seed Alexander Zverev in the previous round.

Griekspoor pounded 10 aces and broke Mpetshi Perricard’s mighty serve twice en route to the win.

Southern California native Marcos Giron came from behind to beat Alexei Popyrin 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in a match where the struggling Australian converted just one of his 15 break point chances.

It is the 31-year-old Giron’s first time reaching the fourth round of the tournament.

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — Defending champion Iga Swiatek cruised past Dayana Yastremska 6-0, 6-2 on Sunday to reach the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.

The dominant display followed her 6-2, 6-0 victory over Caroline Garcia in her first match.

Swiatek, the No. 2 seed, is aiming to become the first woman to win the tournament three times.

She looked eager to do so in as little time as possible, reeling off 10 games in a row and needing just 65 minutes.

“At the end, I got a bit tired — it’s always hard to finish a match like that, but I’m happy that I kept my intensity up in the last game to close it,” she said. “I had control from the beginning so I’m happy with the performance for sure.”

The five-time major champion has not won a title since her triumph at Roland Garros in 2024, her longest drought since winning her first major title in 2020.

She served a one-month suspension in October for a failed drug test and has seen Aryna Sabalenka take her world No. 1 ranking, but said the California desert is an ideal setting to get back to winning ways.

“It’s amazing, I love coming here,” Swiatek said. “I already have my routine so it feels like home. It’s, for sure, the place to be and a great place to play tennis.”

Swiatek will face either 15th seed Karolina Muchova or Katerina Siniakova in the round of 16.

On the men’s side, Tallon Griekspoor toppled No. 29 seed Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard after stunning top seed Alexander Zverev in the previous round.

Griekspoor pounded 10 aces and broke Mpetshi Perricard’s mighty serve twice en route to the win under sunny skies in the California desert.

And popular American Tommy Paul notched his 50th win at a Masters 1000 tournament with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Britain’s Cameron Norrie.

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — Novak Djokovic was shocked by Botic Van De Zandschulp 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday, suffering an early exit at the hands of a tournament lucky loser for a second consecutive year.

Djokovic fell to lucky loser Luca Nardi of Italy in the California desert last year, and history repeated itself on the Stadium One court a day after top-seeded Alexander Zverev also went out.

Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, got off to a horrid start, hitting 14 unforced errors and being broken twice in the first set.

He regrouped to race out to a 3-0 lead in the second, leveling the contest with a mighty forehand winner and pumping his fist to the sold-out crowd.

But Van De Zandschulp ran away with the decider, breaking Djokovic for a fourth time by a perfectly executed lob for a 3-1 lead and sealing the stunning upset when Djokovic’s shot went wide on match point.

“I started really well, and then of course Novak came back,” said Van De Zandschulp, who secured a berth to the tournament upon the withdrawal of 47th-ranked Facundo Diaz Acosta.

“In the end and in the third set I was happy to get my level back.”

Van De Zandschulp was up a set and 3-0 on Nick Kyrgios in his first-round match on Stadium One on Thursday before the Australian withdrew with wrist pain.

Djokovic, 37, retired from his Australian Open semifinal against Zverev with a hamstring injury and lost in the Qatar Open first round last month.

He said the leg injury was behind him coming into the tournament and did not look hampered by it in his match Saturday, when he was accompanied by coach Andy Murray.

Djokovic’s loss led a day of upsets that included seventh-seeded Andrey Rublev losing 6-4, 7-5 to Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi and 17th-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime falling to American Jenson Brooksby 6-4, 6-2.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is not playing at the tournament as he serves a doping suspension.

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — Newly minted Australian Open champion Madison Keys crushed Anastasia Potapova 6-3, 6-0 at Indian Wells on Saturday in her first match as a Grand Slam champion.

Keys broke Russian Potapova’s serve for a third time to clinch the first set and rolled through the one-sided second set under sunny skies in the California desert to extend her winning streak to 13 matches.

“I’m so happy to be here,” Keys said in an interview on center court after the match.

“Australia was obviously an amazing moment so it’s really nice to be playing at home for my first tournament back at a place I’ve played at so many times in front of some amazing people.”

Next up for world No. 5 Keys is a third-round meeting with 28th seed Elise Mertens, who beat Kimberly Birrell of Australia 6-4, 7-5 later Saturday.
